Shelby Cobras & Mustangs

In the Sixties, a collaboration began between the successful race driver Carroll Shelby and Ford that brought about both the famous Cobra two-seater and some of the fastest Mustang models.

The first Shelby Mustangs were based on the 2 + 2 Fastback with a modified 289 cubic inch V8 engine. A racing version (GT350R) and a street version were available, in 1966, Hertz even bought a limited rental car series (GT350H).

With the second Mustang series, a Shelby GT500 model with a 428 cubic inch big block was introduced - the very rare "Super Snake" received the 427 Medium Riser V8 instead. One year later, the 289 V8 of the GT350 was replaced by a 302 with a four barrel carburetor while the GT500KR with a 428 Cobra Jet engine became "King of the Road". All models received the additional designation "Cobra". Until the end of the decade, both Shelby Mustangs could be ordered as convertibles as well.

The '69 Cobra GT350 was delivered with a 351 Windsor V8 with a RAM AIR intake system that was also used with the 428 big block of the GT500. The last '69 Shelby Mustangs were sold as '70 models after some exterior modifications. Carroll Shelby himself at this point in time had already turned away from the Mustang that over the years had become too big and heavy for car racing. However, his influence on the design of some sporty Chrysler models and the development of the Shelby Series 1 roadster kept the legend associated with his name alive during the following decades. Newer projects are the marketing of a GT500E (for "Eleanor") that was inspired by the movie "Gone in 60 seconds" as well as the presentation of spectacular Concept Cars.
