Literature

The intention of this part is to collect over the time monographs dealing with the different colourful aspects of French postal history. This page cannot be complete but it would be fine if it approaches a saturating level. The books are listed in an alphabetical order of the author's name in the subsections Prephilately (up to 1848), Classics (1849-1875), Franco-Prussian war, Semi-modern period (1876-1945), Modern period (since 1945), French postal services abroad, Postmarks, Postal Stationary, Labels, Tariffs, and Miscellaneous. In addition to monographs this page contains informations about catalogues and journals dedicated to French philately and postal history.

Another good source for information about the literature after 1941 are the literature review notes of the following indices: Stone, R.G.; Index of nos. 1-182 (1941-1980) of the France & Colonies Philatelist (France & Colonies Philatelic Society of the USA); 1981 and Barker, G.E.; Cumulative index to society periodicals 1949 -1997 (France & Colonies Philatelic Society of the United Kingdom); 1998.

The mentioned supplier addresses can be found in the dealer and society addresses sections. Prices (if mentioned) are without postage. Monographs without supplier addresses are available only second-hand. Addresses of philatelic libraries are included too.

Also in this literature section I would be very thankful if important literature contributions are indicated to me. What do you use? Please give me the references.

Just insert the term, click the button, or press Enter. If you want to see the second or following mentions of this term, just press Enter. This small Java script cannot work with combinations of words (e. g. "Pothion and convoyeur", try "Pothion" and "convoyeur" separately). Cause this script does not work with Internet Explorer, IE users have to use the Ctrl-F command for search :-(.

A rich source of second-hand literature are the auction catalogues in France. Recent publications can be obtained from "Timbroscopie" and Yvert et Tellier. In addition, dealers specialized in philatelic literature may have what you need. Here are some:

Where can I borrow philatelic literature?

A list of philatelic libraries (mostly attached to postal museums) can be found here. In addition, some local US libraries are listed here.

Philatelic societies, in addition, possess very focussed libraries dedicated to French philately and postal history.
