The Steyr-Puch Haflinger is a lightweight, for person and material transport suitable vehicle for extreme off-road terrain, with special construction design.
In comparison to the constuction of other off-road cars in this time (big watercooled front engine, rear wheel drive with connectable front wheel drive, stiff axles with plate-springs)has the Haflinger an on principle other construction. These vehicles were really heavy and not very maneuverable.
Itīs excellent off-road characteristic comes from independent suspension, rear-engine and rear wheel drive with connectable front wheel drive and the differential locks may be engaged on-the-go while the vehicle is moving"s. Itīs swing-axles as a portal type and the extreme short wheel-base are giving him, in spite of the little wheel-diameter (12 inch), enough ground clearance.
The chassis consists of a backbone frame with attached platform consists of corrugated sheet-metal. The roof is a canvas roof and the windshield can be turned down.
This vehicle had been built from 1959 to 1974 in the Steyr-Daimler-Puch company in Graz. In this time they produced only 16647 vehicles (this explains the high price level of this car). Most of these cars are in use (or had been in use) at the austrian, swiss, indonesian and other armys. In Austria were sold 2917 cars. The Haflinger was and is up to now very popular for hunters.
The engine is an air cooled, two-cylinder four-stroke Otto version. The air-cooling has some advantages in off-road cars : If you drive in hard terrain, the engine has an high speed and the amount of cooling air is very high. (air cannot freeze, Luft cannot boil and air neednīt to be refilled). The cubic capacity of this engine is 643 cm3, with a stroke/bore ratio of 64/80 . The power depends on the type and is 22hp, 24hp or 27hp (later models middle 1967). The highest speed is at 4500 R.P.M. and is controlled by a mechanical centrifugal force controller. This results the top speed (depends on the ratio in the portal axles) between 52 and 75 km/h.
